Lehigh Valley Health Network Children’s Hospital
Launching a hospital from a kid’s perspective.
The world looks different when you’re 3 feet tall. Things are bigger. The ordinary can seem fascinating. Or scary. It’s a world of giggles. Tears. Boo-boos. Hugs. Then we grow up. We forget what it’s like to be a child. Most of the time, that’s OK. But sometimes it’s important to change perspective. To remember what hurts. What helps. What scares. What soothes.
As Lehigh Valley Health Center got ready to open the doors to the first free-standing children’s hospital in the community, we knew this couldn’t just be another “advanced medicine” story. So we started by getting down on the floor and playing with a whole bunch of kids. They inspired us to reimagine the children’s hospital from their perspective. Abracadabra! A hospital room became a secret lair. A wheelchair became a rocket mobile. A monitor became mission control. A doctor became a magician.
Results
The hospital saw a 31% increase in pediatrician and specialist referrals over the prior year, as well as a 27% growth in volume, hospitalwide. Even sweeter, the 12 “kid-created” billboards drew so much attention that Lehigh Valley Business wrote a two-page article on the impact and effectiveness of the launch campaign.
